Royals Claim Right-Hander Suzuki
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ The Kansas City Royals claimed right-hander Mac Suzuki off waivers from the Mets on Tuesday, before he even pitched a game for New York.
Suzuki, acquired Friday from Seattle with a player to be named for Allen Watson, needed to clear waivers before the Mets could send him to the minor leagues.
Suzuki is the first Japanese-born player to play in the major leagues without starting his career in Japan’s professional leagues.
During three major league seasons with Seattle, Suzuki was 1-4 with a 9.17 ERA in 23 games, including nine starts. He was 0-2 with a 9.43 ERA in 16 games this season.
The Mets replaced Suzuki on the 25-man roster with infielder Melvin Mora, who was called up from Triple-A Norfolk.
