Teen-ager Impaled With Metal Rod
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ A metal rod crashed through the windshield of a minivan, impaled the body of a teen-age girl and lodged in the back of her seat.
The 13-year-old girl, sitting in the front seat Thursday while her mother was driving on Interstate 95, was removed from the minivan with the 28-inch bar still inside her, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The girl, who was conscious when she arrived at the hospital, suffered a perforated lung but is expected to recover. She was in critical condition.
``We used the tools we had for rescue, we cut the rod, pulled her away from the seat, put her in a stretcher and she went into the E.R.,″ said Alex Halverson of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.
Authorities said the rod apparently was kicked up by another vehicle and thrown into the minivan’s windshield.
``It’s luck,″ said Dr. Moshe Stav, who operated on the girl. ``We can save people, but if had hit her heart, nobody could have saved her.″
