840-Pound Woman Taken to Hospital
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ An 840-pound woman who was injured in the rowhouse she hadn’t left for three years was taken to a hospital by firefighters who used a mattress and pulleys to lift her out of a second-story window.
The woman, in her 50s, had gotten up from bed and fallen. Her injuries weren’t serious, but she was having trouble breathing and paramedics determined Monday she should be taken to the hospital.
She was too large to be taken down the stairs, so firefighters found a door and put a mattress on top of it. They fashioned a harness of nylon straps to a rope and used pulleys attached to a fire truck’s ladder to hoist her out the window and lower her to the ground.
The woman, who wasn’t identified, was in fair condition in a hospital. Relatives wouldn’t comment.
