Clemens Starts Game 1 Today

July 18, 2001

DETROIT (AP) _ Roger Clemens started the first game of a doubleheader for the New York Yankees against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday in place of Adrian Hernandez, who was ill.

Hernandez had been expected to be sent back to a Triple-A Columbus following the game. He was not officially recalled.

Clemens sought out Torre to volunteer to pitch, one day before he was scheduled to.

``He was very forceful that he was fine,″ Torre said of Clemens. ``He feels he can get us deep into the game. We were vulnerable. We were crying, ‘Uncle,’ at that point.″
