Rower’s Boat Found Off Irish Coast
DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) _ The Irish coast guard said Friday that a small boat found floating upside down and empty off the west coast of Ireland was the craft of a missing American who set out six months ago from Massachusetts to Cape Cod in an attempt to row across the Atlantic Ocean.
No body was found.
Retired Chicago cardiologist Dr. Nenad Belic, 62, was trying to become the third person to row a boat from Cape Cod to Europe when he ran into trouble in a storm.
A distress signal was picked up about 200 miles west of Bantry Bay in southwest Ireland on Sept. 30, sparking a major search operation. But there was no sign of the rower or his 20-foot rowboat.
A fishing vessel spotted the boat Friday afternoon, less than seven miles from Kilkee, County Clare.
The Irish Coast Guard said there was no body on board the boat, the LUN, which was being towed to Kilkee.
