NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ Doug Amacher scored at 1:13 of the second overtime Wednesday to lift Virginia to a 10-9 victory over Yale in the opening round of the NCAA lacrosse tournament.

Virginia, ranked ninth in the nation, advances to a second-round game Sunday at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

Sophomore midfielder Mike Smith paced Virginia, 8-4, with three goals. Rob Schmalz’ pass set up Amacher’s 15-foot game-winning goal.

Adam Puritz scored four goals and added three assists for Yale, 12-4.
