New Mexico 40, Texas Christian 10

November 1, 1997

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) _ Graham Leigh tossed three touchdown passes to Pascal Volz and scored once himself as New Mexico waltzed to a 40-10 victory over Texas Christian’s winless Horned Frogs Saturday.

Volz, a fleet senior from Tempe, Ariz., pulled down scoring shots of 33, 40 and 24 yards as the Lobos (7-2, 4-2) remained a contender in the Western Athletic Conference Mountain Division.

The Horned Frogs, playing under lame duck coach Pat Sullivan, dropped their eighth in a row this year and 10th straight dating back to 1996.

Sullivan announced his resignation last week but chose to remain until the end of the current season, TCU’s most dismal since an equally futile 0-8 start in 1980.

Nursing a 17-10 halftime lead, the Lobos broke it open with two third-quarter touchdowns, Leigh to Volz for 40 yards to cap an 80-yard drive and then the 24-yarder to wrap up a 53-yard march.

The three touchdown receptions gave Volz 13 for the year, tying the school record set by Terance Mathis in 1989. The three TD catches also tied his own single-game record.

The Lobos struck quickly, moving 79 yards in six plays for their first touchdown with less than two minutes elapsed. Lennox Gordon’s 12-yard TD run was set up by a 42-yard pass from Leigh to Volz, who caught seven on the day for 168 yards.

Leigh, who scrambled six yards for the final New Mexico TD, completed 10 of 19 passes for 216 yards.

TCU scored its only first-quarter touchdown of the year to tie it at 7-7 on Derek Canine’s 12-yard shovel pass to Basil Mitchell. The pass capped a 58-yard drive that included 27 yards in Lobo penalities, including a personal foul that got New Mexico tackle Bill Borchers booted from the game.
