BOSTON (AP) — Boston Mayor Marty Walsh says public schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday due to a prolonged snowstorm.

He also said Sunday during a City Hall briefing that a snow emergency and parking ban will go into effect at 4 p.m. Walsh said Boston is seeing an "unprecedented" amount of snow and defended his administration's response to the storms, which have blanketed the region with more than three feet of snow.

He suggested no American mayor outside of Alaska and Buffalo, New York has dealt with the amount of snow Boston has seen in such a short time frame as he has over the past two weeks. Walsh said Boston has already exceeded its $18 million snow removal budget. A storm lasting through Tuesday morning is expected to bring up to two feet of new snow
