Orland Park school leader named top school board president
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A leader from a school district in Chicago’s southwestern suburbs has been named the state’s top school board president.
The Illinois State Board of Education announced this week Richard Nogal has been awarded the 2018 Thomas Lay Burroughs Award. Nogal is board president for Consolidated High School District 230 . It’s based in Orland Park.
The award is named for a late ISBE board chairman and recognizes extraordinary local leadership. Its emphasis is on advancing student learning, expanding educational opportunities and resolving difficulties.
Nogal led cooperative leadership and decision-making for the 7,300-student district by including representatives from school staff and the community to serve on the board’s goal-setting and idea-generating committees. He created “Community Connection” to bring together partner school boards, law enforcement and municipal officials to discuss issues.
