Report: Diana to Delay Divorce Unless Charles Stops Quibbling
LONDON (AP) _ Princess Diana has told the queen she’ll make Prince Charles wait another 19 months for a divorce unless he stops quibbling over settlement terms, according to a news report today.
The London tabloid The Sun said Diana’s lawyer Anthony Julius told Queen Elizabeth II Tuesday that divorce negotiations between lawyers for the two sides were bogged down.
Diana warned the next day that unless there was movement to break the deadlock she would issue a prepared press statement announcing she was pulling out of the talks altogether, the paper reported.
After first saying she wouldn’t agree to a divorce, Diana changed her mind in February. But she has refused to sign a divorce agreement until she is satisfied she will get a fair deal. The couple formally separated in December 1992 after 11 years of marriage.
In other news of the royal family, the cash-hungry Duchess of York has clinched a deal with a U.S. publisher to write a new book for single mothers based on her own experience, according to a news report.
The London tabloid the Daily Express said today that the $1.9 million deal with Simon and Schuster followed an auction between five U.S. publishers.
The 36-year-old duchess, the former Sarah Ferguson known widely as Fergie, separated from Prince Andrew in March 1992 after 5 1/2 years of marriage.
