MEMPHIS (AP) _ FedEx Freight, the freight-services unit of FedEx Corp., is raising rates 5.9 percent, effective July 22.

FedEx said Thursday that FedEx Freight East and FedEx Freight West, FedEx Freight's two independent operating units, will have a single base rate tariff and a single rules tariff.

Shippers will be able to get rate quotes online. After July 22, the new FedEx Freight base rate and rules tariffs will be available on the Web site.

The increase applies to intra- and interstate traffic, including Canadian transborder and other international lanes, as well as minimum and accessorial charges. FedEx Freight also will make various additional adjustments to selected lanes and service areas.

FedEx Freight said the increase is necessary to support and improve technology offerings, service centers, equipment, and safety and security programs. Proceeds from the rate hike also will partially offset substantial increases in health-care costs and insurance premiums in fiscal 2003, the company said.

A FedEx representative wasn't immediately available to provide additional information.

In January, FedEx raised its own shipping rates an average of 3.5 percent. The delivery giant is based in Memphis.
