Teen charged in 8-year-old Urbana boy’s shooting
URBANA, Ill. (AP) — A prosecutor has charged a 15-year-old Urbana boy with reckless discharge of a firearm in the shooting of an 8-year-old relative.
A judge on Wednesday also released the teenager to his mother’s home pending further juvenile court action.
Relatives told The News-Gazette in Champaign (http://bit.ly/1m9B198 ) that the younger child was in critical condition at a local hospital after surgery.
The older boy told police that the shooting happened Tuesday when he knocked a backpack that apparently contained a gun off a table. Police say that was inconsistent with evidence officers found.
The gun was a flare gun modified to fire shotgun shells.
Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz opted against the more serious charge of aggravated battery with a firearm. That charge would have moved the case to adult court.
