Winfield basketball standout Simpkins signs with Battlers
WINFIELD, W.Va. — Winfield High School boys basketball standout Zach Simpkins signed Friday to play at Alderson Broaddus College.
Simpkins helped the Generals to an 11-13 record last season and averaged 18 points per game. He scored a career-high 27 vs. Parkersburg Catholic.
Winfield coach Chris Stephens said he is thrilled that Simpkins’ diligence paid off.
“Zach is a very inspirational success story for high school athletes,” Stephens said. “He could have gone about basketball as a hobby and something fun to do and been OK at it, but he chose to put a lot of time and effort into his game to reach a goal. Zach’s hard work the past two or three years has earned him the privilege to compete at the college level.”
Stephens said the key to Simpkins’ success was self motivation.
“He’s put in a lot of time on the court and the weight room and on his own to elevate his game,” Stephens said. “I believe he still has several more years where he’ll continue to make huge leaps in his basketball abilities. I look forward to watching him in a Battlers jersey.”
Alderson Broaddus went 13-16 overall, 9-11 in the NCAA Division II Great Midwest Athletic Conference last season. The Battlers lose just two seniors from last season’s team.
