ALA unit to hold monthly meeting Thursday at post
The October American Legion Auxiliary Pitterle-Beaudoin Unit 189 meeting will convene Thursday at 6 p.m. at the post, 206 S. First St.
October is Education Month. Unit 189 offers an annual $500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior, and the local American Legion Family awards a three-year nursing scholarship. Numerous scholarships, with varying requirements, are also available through the American Legion Family and can be found on the websites. Unit chairwoman is Carol Peters.
A brief overview will be presented on the recent ALA in the Know seminar.
Karen Herritz, Veteran Affairs and Rehabilitation unit chairwoman, is asking for items for the Madison VA. If interested in donating, these may be brought to the meeting: crew socks, sizes 10-13, black, gray or white; diabetic socks; sweatshirts and sweatpants, sizes medium, large, XL, XXL, XXXL, any color; knit hats, any color; gloves, sizes medium, large, XL; and men’s briefs, sizes medium, XL, XXL, XXXL. These should be new items.
Luminaries will again be offered in memory or in honor of veterans and active duty personnel. Forms will be available at Thursday’s meeting. The luminaries will be displayed in the Keck Furniture window and will remain lit overnight for Veterans Day.
2019 dues may be paid at the meeting, via internet at www.ALAforVeterans.org or by calling national headquarters at 317-569-4536, Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Upcoming events include the Jefferson County Council meeting Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Lake Mills post, and the children’s Halloween parade Sunday, Oct. 28, at 4 p.m. Treats will be given at the end of the parade route.
