Patricia ‘Diane’ Altman

November 7, 2018

Patricia “Diane” Altman, 69, of Michigan City, Ind., passed away peacefully at 1:50 a.m., Oct. 31, 2018, at Northwestern Hospital, Chicago, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born July 15, 1949, in Newport, Ark., the daughter of Eva (Smallwood) Cantrell. Her father, Hollis Cantrell, preceded her in death as a result of injuries he received in a farming accident before Diane was born.

Diane was a homemaker and a wonderful mother and wonderful grandmother; more recently she also had become a loving great-grandmother. She attended night school and graduated in 1989 from Elston High School. Diane then went on to take classes at Purdue University North Central. She worked in factories and the restaurant industry. While living in Kankakee, she worked for more than five years at Fesco Plastics while she worked at the Ham and Egger. She always had been a hard worker. After moving to the Michigan City area, Diane worked at Sumarita and the Harmony Bar but most of all enjoyed her employment as a banquet worker at Holiday Inn.

She loved her family first and foremost. Her other interests included bowling, dancing and traveling. Diane loved animals and was a member and donor to the ASPCA. She also was a donor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Shriner Hospital for Children.

On Oct. 5, 1995, Diane married the love of her life, Elvin L. Altman. He survives.

Also surviving are two children, Kristine (Bryce Hauch) Heckman, of Gillette, Wyo., and Jason Siebert, of San Pierre, Ind.; three brothers, John (Janet) Cantrell, of Chebanse, David (Marty) Cantrell, of Bourbonnais, and Cecil Emory, of Black Rock, Ark.; one sister, Barbara (John) Lund, of Donovan; five grandchildren, Zachary Siebert, of Michigan City, Jasmine Siebert, of Collinsville, Vivian Heckman, of Gillette, and Drew Heath and Christian Siebert, both of Michigan City; two great-grandchildren, Lachlan and Lestat; many nieces and nephews, including nephew Johnny Cantrell, whom she thought of as a son; and best friend of 53 years, Becky (Delbert) Clark, whom she thought of as a sister.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and nephew, Shane Cyrier.

A celebration of life took place Tuesday at Lakeview Funeral Home in LaPorte, Ind., with the Rev. Roger Ash officiating.

Memorials may be made to Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio St., Suite 500, Chicago, IL 60611.
