UC Irvine 74, CSU-Chico 66

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) _ Adam Stetson scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds Friday night as UC Irvine equaled its victory total of last season by beating Chico State 74-66.

The Anteaters (1-2), playing under first-year coach Pat Douglass, had a 1-25 record last season. UC Irvine lost its final 12 games last winter as well as its first two this fall.

Freshman Malachi Edmond scored 16 points and Juma Jackson added 10 for the Anteaters, who made 25 of their 55 field goal attempts and 16 of their 21 free throws.

Chico State, a Division II school, was just 29-of-65 from the floor and 1-of-7 from the foul line.

Derek Byrd led Chico State (2-2) with 17 points and eight rebounds. Anthony Lambert had 12 points and five assists, Tyrone Miles scored 10 points, and Andre Speech had nine points and 13 rebounds for the losers.

UC Irvine led 37-33 at halftime, but Chico State build a 49-44 lead early in the second half.

Chico State took its final lead at 62-61 on a basket by Byrd with 5:21 left. Junior Bond made a pair of foul shots 10 seconds later to put UC Irvine ahead for good and trigger a 13-4 game-closing run by the Anteaters.
