Injured IRL Driver Transferred
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Sam Schmidt, who sustained severe injuries to both feet in the Indy Racing League’s Mall.com 500 on Sunday, was flown from Dallas to Indianapolis today for additional surgery at Methodist Hospital.
Schmidt, 34, fractured both feet in the collision with Scott Sharp at the Texas Motor Speedway. Part of his right big toe was amputated during a first operation that night.
``We have a second surgery scheduled for Thursday,″ Treadway Racing spokeswoman Ruthie Culbertson said today.
``Basically the left foot has been completely smashed,″ she said. ``They went into the left foot and set some of the fractures but they can’t actually put the pins in until the swelling has gone down, which they think will be by Thursday.″
Schmidt, who finished 22nd in the race, was listed in good condition.
``He’s doing very well,″ Culbertson said. ``He’s in a large quantity of pain. They had him on a constant morphine drip. He’s not around (alert) much, which is good.″
