ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Reliever Luther Hackman was scheduled to start in place of the struggling Bud Smith as the St. Louis Cardinals concluded a four-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.
Smith, 0-5 with a 7.18 ERA, hasn’t pitched more than 5 1-3 innings in any of his eight starts.
Hackman will be making his first major league start since 1999 and first start of any kind since the 2000 season with Triple-A Memphis, when he made 21 starts.
Hackman made three starts for the Colorado Rockies in ’99.
This season, Hackman has been used in short relief, totaling 34 1-3 innings in 23 appearances before Sunday. He was 1-3 with a 3.41 ERA.
