’Mystery Science Theatre 3000: Sci-fi TV zanies make a Danbury stop

September 12, 2018

A stage version of the cult favorite TV series, “Mystery Science Theatre 3000,” is coming to the Palace Theatre in Danbury.

Frank Conniff and Trace Beaulieu have spent many years on the show that sends up terrible science-fiction and horror movies of the 1950s and 1960s, such as “The Killer Shrews,” the notorious 1959 film in which dogs were dressed up in “giant shrew” costumes.

Conniff and Beaulieu are responsible for one of the series’ catchphrases, “Push the button, Frank.”

“Mystery Science Theatre 3000” was launched as a local Minneapolis TV show in 1988. It was then picked up by Comedy Central for several seasons, followed by the Sci-Fi Channel. Last year, Netflix released a new batch of 17 episodes.

The show taps into the inadvertent humor in B-movies, as wise guys Conniff and Beaulieu make fun of films that are so bad they’re good. The movie to be roasted in Danbury is being kept a surprise.

Palace Theatre, 165 Main St., Danbury. Friday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. $35-$30. 203-794-9944
