Backhoe Fire Investigated in Lowell

LOWELL -- Firefighters are investigating what caused a backhoe to burst into flames at an industrial facility in the city’s Acre neighborhood on Sunday night.

Firefighters arrived at Boston Concrete, 706 Broadway St., around 8:45 p.m. to find the backhoe on fire, Lowell Fire Deputy Chief Bob Beane said.

The fire was extinguished “rather quickly,” he added. No injuries were reported.

Lowell police closed a portion of Broadway Street while firefighters put out the flames.

Library delivers REACT series

CHELMSFORD -- As part of its yearlong Read, Engage and Come Together (REACT) series, the Chelmsford Public Library will host a series of presentations on issues facing the LGTBQ+ community in May and June.

The series begins on May 9 at 7 p.m. with author Alex Myers, who will discuss the transgender experience and his ancestor Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man to fight in the Revolutionary War.

On May 10 at 1 p.m., public policy expert Keith West will lead a presentation on the history and current state of LGBTQ+ Civil Rights, with a focus on the intersection between religion and sex and gender identities.

On May 13 at 7 p.m., poet and author Leslea Newman will use poetry, photos and creative visualization to explore the world impact of Matthew Shepard’s murder.

Tyngsboro has stuff for sale

TYNGSBORO -- The town is conducting a surplus auction online that began Monday and runs through May 13 at 12 p.m.

Included in the auction is a 2005 Ford Explorer and a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado CK3500, according to a notice on the town website. A link to the auction is available on the website, and all items must be picked up and will need to be towed off the lot.

Garden Club hosts fashion show

WESTFORD -- The Westford Garden Club “Fashion in Bloom” show will be held on May 9 at 6 p.m. at Chelmsford Elks Lodge, 300 Littleton Road. This popular event will showcase spring fashions from Coldwater Creek, Evans on the Common, and Goulds.

Food will be provided as well as a value-filled silent auction and raffle.
