Indoor gun range coming to Rock Falls
ROCK FALLS —Local shooting enthusiasts have only about 2 more months before they can hit a new 24-hour shooting range.
Jim Prescott, owner of 626 Guns, said he expects remodeling to be complete and the range at 1406 S. First Ave. to be open for business – 24 hours a day – in April; his gun shop is about 2 blocks away, at 1114 S. First Ave.
Prescott has obtained approval on all zoning petitions, and the shooting range falls within permitted uses for that area, city Building Inspector Mark Searing said.
When it’s ready to open he and Rock Falls Police Department officials will tour the business and do some testing, Searing said.
“We want to make sure of the noise level outside and things like that.”
Prescott will have policies in place to cover how customers at 626 Guns can take firearms they may be interested in purchasing to the shooting range to try out.
“If there is something they want to try, we’ll probably have to accompany them,” he said.
It’s all part of the expansion 626 Guns has seen since it opened in October 2013.
“We started with the building that had three rooms and we were in the front room,” Prescott said. “Then we expanded into the middle room and then again into the back room.”
Prescott’s background includes many years as a competitive shooter, which led him to open the business, which specializes in firearms sales and accessories.
He also owns Prescott Satellite Systems, which he moved from his gun shop to the shopping center at 2522 E. Lincolnway in Sterling in March.
