Mississippi Beats Alabama St. 74-58

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) _ John Gunn, who missed last season due to a kidney ailment, scored a career-high 16 points to give Mississippi a 74-58 win Wednesday night over Alabama State.

Gunn had not played since the Rebels lost to Arizona in the Sweet 16 of the 2001 NCAA tournament. He was 8-of-11 from the field.

Ole Miss (1-1) struggled in the first half, but the Rebels went on a 14-2 run to build a 50-34 lead with 13:39 left.

Despite shooting only 11-of-27 from the field, Alabama State led 30-29 with 1:56 remaining in the first half on a jumper by Cedric Mitchell. The Hornets forced 10 turnovers and led five times in the first half.

Lamar Clark led Alabama State (0-4) with 15 points. Mitchell had 14 and Alvin Pettway had 13.

David Sanders had 13 points for Ole Miss. Justin Reed and Aaron Harper had 12 apiece for the Rebels, who led only 32-30 at halftime.

Ole Miss shot 15-of-23 from the floor and have won 52 of its last 53 home games against non-conference competition.

The Rebels built their biggest lead, 72-49, on a layup by Kendrick Fox with 2:26 left. Alabama State managed only 12-of-32 in the second half and finished the game shooting 39 percent from the field.
