Athelte Of The Week: Wyoming Seminary's Todd Phillips

STAFF REPORT

Wyoming Seminary junior Todd Phillips scored 16 points, including the game-winner with less than 20 seconds remaining, to help Wyoming Seminary beat Holy Redeemer, 48-47, in the District 2 Class 3A boys basketball championship Thursday.

For his achievement, he was named The Citizens’ Voice Athlete of the Week.

Did you expect the championship to be a back-and-forth game going into it? Well, we played Redeemer twice before this, and we won once at our gym, and then they beat us a second time pretty good at their gym. So, yeah, I was expecting it to be a good game back and forth, but luckily we came out on top.

How did the ball end up in your hands for the game-winning shot? I’m pretty sure I got a pass that went through my hands, and Collin Cook tried to steal it and he ended up falling, and I ended up having a free look at the rim with 15 seconds left. And it just happened to go in.

Would anyone on the team been willing to take that shot with the game on the line?

I think everyone on our team would definitely take that last shot. Everyone wants to get that last shot. And we have full confidence in everyone that they could make it. It just so happens that it was me at the end who was open.

There were parts of the game where your team was down a few points. Is there any panic when you’re down? What goes through your mind? Well mostly, we basically just trust our coaching staff and our teammates and if we’re down a little bit, we try to think about what we can to improve and see what’s working for us and try to execute as best we can.

From a personal standpoint, what does it mean to you to play such a big part in winning a district title? I think it means a lot for me and my family because they help me with everything. They provide me with the opportunity to even go to school and get to play basketball. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to play any sports.

What are you expecting as state playoffs start? We play next Saturday. We made it to the second round last year and lost to Neumann-Goretti. Hopefully we get the second round, and if we’re lucky enough to get to play Neumann-Goretti again, we can come out on top of that game.
