Louisiana teen gets life in stepfather’s slaying

May 22, 2019

COVINGTON, La. (AP) — A Louisiana teenager has been sentenced to life in prison for shooting his stepfather multiple times in the back of his head.

A jury in March convicted 19-year-old Daniel T. Hamilton of second-degree murder in the 2016 death of 51-year-old James “Kenny” Hamilton. He surrendered to authorities two days after the body was found.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports state District Judge Alan Zaunbrecher on Monday ordered the sentence to be served with the possibility of parole, based on new sentencing guidelines for offenders who were juveniles at the time of the crime. Hamilton was 16 when he shot the victim.

Zaunbrecher also sentenced Hamilton to 20 years in prison for each of two counts of solicitation for murder for planning to have the victim’s brother and sister-in-law killed.
