Heavy snowfall forecast for parts of Arizona high country
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Forecasters say northern Arizona’s high country will receive heavy snowfall this weekend. Transportation officials are advising drivers to delay travel and stay off the roads if possible.
The National Weather Service forecasts up to 8 inches (20 centimeters) of snow in Williams and Flagstaff late Saturday and Sunday, with lesser amounts Sunday in communities along the Mogollon Rim and in the White Mountains of eastern Arizona.
The state Department of Transportation notes that recent snowstorms closed parts of Interstate 17 and State Route 89A and says “it’s safest to wait out the storm before driving.”
The department advises people who must travel to pack items such as blankets, warm clothes, food and water, cat litter or sand for traction, a first-aid kit and a fully charged cellphone.
