New problemsemerge on defense

November 20, 2018

NEW ORLEANS - There was a vicious rumor going around the Smoothie King Center, both before and after Monday’s game. Someone was suggesting the New Orleans Pelicans were a difficult team to guard.

By the time Gregg Popovich left the arena, just after 10 p.m., he still wasn’t buying it.

“We held them to 140,” the Spurs coach deadpanned. “What do you mean they’re hard to guard?”

Some of Popovich’s players were in a less gregarious mood after a 140-126 loss to New Orleans that cast new light on defensive shortcomings they thought they had patched up.

Anthony Davis scored 29 points as one of four Pelicans to surpass 20, while Julius Randle produced a 21-point, 14-rebound, 10-assist masterpiece off the bench as New Orleans sent the Spurs tumbling back to .500.
