CBP seizes nearly $1 million at border bridge
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer discovered nearly one million dollars inside a car being driven across the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge in Laredo on Friday.
CBP says the 20-year-old woman was driving a 2010 Nissan Maxima headed to Mexico when she was selected for an outbound inspection.
During a scan of the vehicle officers found 53 bundles of cash totaling $988,550 hidden inside the car.
The woman, who is a U.S. citizen, was arrested. The car and cash were seized by CBP.
It is not illegal to carry more than $10,000 across the border, but it must to declared to a CBP officer upon entering or leaving the country.
The woman can petition to have the money returned to her, but she must prove where she got the one million dollars and what she planned to do with it.
