Energen donating art collection to UAB
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An oil and gas exploration company is giving away its art collection as it vacates its corporate headquarters in downtown Birmingham.
Energen Corp. says it will donate the artwork to the University of Alabama at Birmingham as it vacates the building where it’s been located.
Al.com reports that the “Wonders of Alabama” collection includes more than 265 oils, watercolors, and mixed media artworks.
Energen is merging with Texas-based Diamondback Energy. The deal will mean the company will shut down its Birmingham headquarters sometime next year.
The collection was acquired by Energen through an art competition held annually at the company for 16 years from 1999 to 2015. The competition was designed to showcase Alabama artists and support the visual arts in Alabama.
The artwork will be displayed at the university.
