Venus Williams Beaten by Novotna

MOSCOW (AP) _ Venus Williams was ousted from the Kremlin Cup on Friday, losing her quarterfinal-round match to top-seeded Jana Novotna 7-5, 6-4.

Novotna next will face No. 4 seed Conchita Martinez, the only semifinalist to drop a set Friday. Martinez outlasted Sandrine Testud of France 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Second-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and third-seeded Irina Spirlea both were upset.

Ai Sugiyama of Japan ousted Sanchez-Vicario 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) in Moscow’s indoor Olympic Stadium after outdueling Sanchez Vicario in a second set that lasted over an hour. Then, Belgium’s Dominique Van Roost disposed of Spirlea 6-2, 6-4. The two winners will meet in Saturday’s first semifinal.

The week-long tournament is being played on a Supreme surface.
