Rudolf Nureyev To Tour as King of Siam
NEW YORK (AP) _ Ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, who defected from the Soviet Union in 1961, is about to leap into musical theater, it was announced Tuesday. Starting Aug. 18, Nureyev will tour nationwide as the King of Siam in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, ″The King and I.″ The tour is scheduled to run for 85 weeks over the next three years.
″The King and I″ opened on Broadway in 1951, starring Yul Brynner and Gertrude Lawrence. Brynner and Deborah Kerr starred in the film.
Nureyev says he has never seen the show.
The tour’s Anna will be Liz Robertson, who played Eliza Doolittle in ″My Fair Lady″ and later married the lyricist of that show, Alan Jay Lerner, according to the announcement from Joshua Ellis, a public relations firm.
The ″King and I″ tour, which will visit 13 cities this year, will be scheduled around Nureyev’s commitments with the Paris Opera Ballet, where he has been artistic director since 1983, and his touring dance troupe, ″Nureyev and Friends.″
Cities to be visited this year are Syracuse, N.Y.; Toronto and Ottawa, Canada; Boston; Hartford and Stamford, Conn.; Tampa; Wilmington, Del.; Seattle; Costa Mesa and Los Angeles, Calif., and two to be announced.
