No. 3 Tennessee 83, Marquette 68
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) _ Tiffani Johnson had 24 points and 15 rebounds Saturday to lead No. 3 Tennessee to an 83-68 victory over Marquette in the first round of the Howard Bank Classic.
Chamique Holdsclaw added 17 points and Laurie Mulligan had 15 for Tennessee, which pulled away in the second half to make Pat Summitt the second women’s basketball coach to record 600 career victories.
Tennessee (4-1) struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 29 percent, but still managed to lead 38-34 at halftime.
Marquette (0-1) was led by Clare Barnard who had 21 points and nine rebounds. Sidnee Majette added 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Golden Eagles.
Summitt, in her 23rd year at Tennessee, has a career record of 600-134. She was honored after the game with a standing ovation as Vermont Gov. Howard Dean presented her with a cake and flowers.
Texas coach Jody Conradt entered the season with 675 victories.
Tennessee will face the winner of the second first-round game between Vermont and Canisius in Sunday night’s championship game.
