Fan Who Stole Sosa’s Bats Arrested

October 2, 1999

ST. LOUIS (AP) _ A fan who sneaked on the field and stole bats from Sammy Sosa and Mark Grace in the Chicago Cubs’ dugout was arrested before Friday night’s Cardinals-Cubs game.

Patrick Stangler, 33, of Naperville, Ill., took the bats from the Cubs’ bat rack in the dugout, police Major Lt. Bob Zambo said. He will be charged with trespassing and theft under $750.

``Getting my bat stolen didn’t bother me,″ Sosa said. ``If he would have asked me for it, I would have given it to him.″

Zambo said the fan told him someone wearing a Cubs batting practice jersey had told him it was OK to take the bats.

``I’ve been here 15 years and I don’t ever remember anything like this,″ Zambo said.
