White Plains unveils fleet of electric school buses

November 15, 2018

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — A city in New York’s Westchester County has unveiled the state’s first all-electric school buses.

White Plains Superintendent Joseph Ricca says his school district is proud to be testing the electric buses. WCBS-TV reports the test run of the five buses is being rolled out by school district bus operator National Express.

Officials say the 100-percent electric buses get 66 miles on a full battery charge, and drivers can keep track of battery life by a display on their phone. Con Edison contributed $500,000 toward the purchase of the buses, as officials say they can store energy in the bus batteries when school is not in session during the summer.

Bus driver Andre Stonuy says the otherwise quiet buses emit a melody to alert pedestrians of the vehicle’s approach.
