Von Gruenigen Wins Giant Slalom
ADELBODEN, Switzerland (AP) _ Switzerland’s Michael Von Gruenigen won his third World Cup giant slalom title of the season today, finishing a spectacular 1.96 seconds ahead of countryman Urs Kaelin.
Von Gruenigen, who completed two runs in icy conditions in 2 minutes, 29.96 seconds, moved back into second place in the overall standings, some 300 points behind injured Norwegian star Lasse Kjus.
Tom Stiansen, wearing Norway’s B-team skisuit, finished third in 2.32.70 and Sweden’s Fredrik Nyberg was fourth in 2.32.75. Italian star Alberto Tomba skipped the race because of the flu.
Kjus has not raced since sustaining a severe concussion and facial and body bruises in a training fall last week in Kitzbuehel, Austria.
