October 2, 2018

BURLINGTON —Lakeside Lutheran’s girls cross country team won the Chocolate City Invitational on Saturday.

The Warriors placed its top five girls in the top 12 to score 34 points, six better than runner-up Racine Horlick.

Freshman Mya Hemling won the girls race in 21 minutes, 13 seconds. Sophomore Jada Gresens (third, 22:27) and juniors Kristin Karas (seventh, 23:13), Maddie Abel (11th, 23:45) and Abbie DiGiovanni (12th, 23:48) also scored for the Warriors. Senior Hannah Tucek (16th, 24:59) and junior Lydia Krenke (17th, 25:02) also finished in the top 20.

“This meet was much smaller than it has been in recent years and at a new venue, our girls seized the opportunity and ran very well as a group in both races,” Lakeside Lutheran cross country coach Cameron Ausen said.

“On the varsity side, three girls placed in the top-10 and our five scoring runners were all in the top 12. We were led by freshman Mya Hemling, who became the first LLHS runner to win an individual title for a very long time.

“She was followed by sophomore Jada Gresens and junior Kristin Karas who despite enduring a bad stitch during the second mile, was able to rebound and pass two runners in the final mile en route to a new personal best.”

Lakeside junior August Gresens (second, 17:48) led an incomplete boys team. Junior Ben Ertman (20th, 20:03) and freshman Jonathan Abel (23rd, 20:21) also competed for the Warriors.

“On the boys’ side, we took some steps forward and some steps backward,” Ausen said.

“Two runners that had broken 20 minutes last week at Naga-Waukee Park were back over 20 minutes in Burlington as they continue to get used to varsity-level racing.

“Three of the four JV runners ran season bests as we continue to see improvement throughout the roster.

“We were led by junior August Gresens, who was in ninth at the mile, but patiently worked his way through the ranks and closed the door on three pursuers that all finished within seven seconds of August.”
