Boys basketball: Atascocita defense helps defeat Kingwood
Atascocita picked up its fifth District 22-6A win of the season after defeating Kingwood 48-23 Tuesday night at the Mustangs gym.
Eagles head coach David Martinez was pleased to see the Eagles bounce back after losing to Humble last Saturday.
“We were really playing Atascocita defense,” Martinez said. “I thought we played great defense, followed the game plan and played a great game. We really just refocused. We have eight games left and just have to take it one game at a time from here on out.”
Atascocita defense held the Mustangs offense to under seven points in each quarter.
Senior forward Nick Gazelas led the Eagles with 13 points while Nick Neuman led the Mustangs with seven points.
The game was close in the first half with Atascocita taking a 21-13 lead into the locker room.
The Eagles (19-6, 5-3) broke open the game in the second half with their drive and post-game.
Atascocita’s defense turned up the pressure in the third quarter — only allowing four points to the Mustangs (11-15, 2-5).
Senior post Kenyon Green added 10 points for the Eagles.
Atascocita outscored the Mustangs 27-10 in the second half with its smothering pressure defense.
“That’s not us and that’s not our brand of basketball,” said Kingwood head coach Monte Cole. “We allowed Atascocita to dictate how we played. I thought defensively we did well in the first half, but it got away from us in the second half. In the second half we weren’t able to make some shots and they stretched us out on defense and we weren’t in the right spots. We have to forget about this one, learn from it and move on. There are no easy outs and we have to be ready for our next game.”
