Hempfield nursing home evacuated following power loss

August 12, 2018

A power outage resulted in the evacuation of a nursing home in Hempfield Township on Sunday evening.

Westmoreland County 911 dispatchers called for buses to respond to the Oak Hill Nursing & Rehab Center, on Georges Station Road, sometime after 6 p.m. when the power went out there and residents required relocation.

According to information provided by electrical supply company First Energy, an equipment failure at the intersection of Georges Station and Slate Run roads resulted in loss of power for up to 20 customers.

The power company’s online outage tool indicated at 8:45 p.m. power could be restored by 10 p.m.

A dispatcher said the facility was being evacuated as a precaution, but did not say where residents would spend the night.

According to state police, the power outage was caused by weather.
