How they voted: Needles Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting in regular session on May 21, 2019. Trustees Christina Cameron-Otero, Laurie Fragoso, June Leivas, John Paul Lusk, Marilyn Mathews, Robert Smith and Superintendent Mary McNeil were present.

The executive session continued until nearly 7 p.m. No report was given; the board was to go into a second executive session after the public session was conducted.

NUSD informational item, presentations and recognition:

Retirement - Linda Tibbets and Joy Moorhead were presented with plaques of recognition.

Recognize NUSD staff for heroism - Matt Fromelt, Nancy Guffey, Manuel Calderon and Gena Chavira were presented with certificates of recognition for their potentially life-saving actions when faced with a student’s medical emergency.

Recognize spring sports programs of baseball, golf and softball. The 2019 NIAA State Champion Lady ’Stangs softball team was present to receive certificates of recognition. Coach Bill Darrow was present to receive a certificate for the golf program.

Career Technical Education — Chef Delphine Jones made a presentation on the culinary arts program at NHS; Stacey Martinez, with two of her students, made a presentation on the Art, Media and Entertainment program.

Presentation by the NHS Hiking Club and sponsor Jane Sloan. Not present.

Recognition of Lauren Hartter, Associated Student Body representative.

NUSD action item: Hold public hearing, present certificates of completion of staff development for Chef Delphine Jones and Stacey Martinez to offer specially designed instruction in English to those learning the language.

NUSD action item: Approve third quarterly report for monitoring compliance with the Williams settlement, which requires schools to report the overall condition of facilities, number of teacher mis-assignments and vacant teacher positions, and the availability of textbooks or instructional material.

NUSD action item: Approve contract with county public health department for nursing services in school year 2019-20. Rates include $17.22 each for hearing or scoliosis exams; $85.48 per hour for registered nursing duties; $126.27 per hour for nurse practitioner services; $88.58 per hour for a public health nurse; $121.61 for a supervising public health nurse. Services are to be performed for all school sites.

NUSD action item: Review and approve contract with county probation department for an on-site probation officer for the 2019-20 school year.

Money coming in and how to spend it will occupy the board in two special meetings next month: Tuesday, June 11 and 18. Both begin at 5 p.m. in the district office on Erin Drive in Needles. The board will review the Local Control and Accountability Plan and Local Control Funding Formula in the first meeting with final review and approval during the second.

Key: Y is a yes vote, N is a no vote, A is abstain from voting.
