50 things to do this weekend, May 24, 25 and 26

May 23, 2019

It’s all about the classics this weekend, as in the cool Southern rock of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the iconic R&B/soul of The Temptations, and the folk music of Lucy Kaplansky. The thing is, all three shows are Friday night, so you may have to clone yourself!

Mohegan Sun Arena is where you can catch Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour.” Guitarist Rickey Medlocke told us it’s “an incredible production that walks you through the history of the band,” and there’s a surprise connected with “Free Bird.”

The Temptations, including original member Otis Williams, will be at New Haven’s Shubert Theatre. Williams said he’s already seen the new Broadway musical, “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations,” several times, and is touched to know fans are getting a chance to hear his story. Meanwhile, Fairfield Theatre Company is where Kaplansky will play a mix of classics and tunes from her new album, “Everyday Street.”

Of course there’s plenty of comedy on tap, too, along with interesting opportunities to enjoy the outdoors (now that it’s getting nicer). Comedian Tom Cotter, of “America’s Got Talent” fame, plays several shows through Saturday at The Stress Factory in Bridgeport, while the irrepressible, opinionated Bill Maher plays Foxwoods on Saturday. And Sheffield Island cruises kick off for the season Saturday in South Norwalk.

That’s just a small sample of what’s out there. Check out our slide show to see what else you might enjoy.
