HUNTINGTON - “How wonderful it is to have a children’s hospital right at our back door. Some of these children would have no hope of survival without it,” said Norma Carroll on why donations to the Hoops Family Children’s Hospital make a difference in the community.

Carroll and her husband Charlie have been longtime supporters of Cabell Huntington Hospital through donations and volunteer work.

“This couple, especially Norma, has saturated the hospital with their love,” said Kristi Arrowood, director of development of the Cabell Huntington Hospital Foundation.

“And when Norma toured the children’s hospital, she was so touched by the care of the smallest of babies; I think she left part of her heart there.”

“Norma is one of the best-kept secrets in Huntington,” said Charlie, Norma’s husband of 69 years.

“The donation developed from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit tour. The staff is so dedicated, concerned and determined to help those babies. Norma was determined to support them.”

In addition to supporting the children’s hospital, Norma volunteers in the community and was a volunteer at Cabell Huntington Hospital’s pharmacy during the 1970s.

She was also instrumental in creating the gift shop at the Huntington Museum of Art, served as president, treasurer and auditor of the Huntington Garden Club; served as treasurer and is a Golden Life Member of the Women’s Club of Huntington and is a former member of the selection committee for Huntington’s Wall of Fame.

In 2013, Norma was named the Liberal Arts College Alumni of the Year at Marshall University.

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude,” said Arrowood. “This small token of appreciation is just a drop in the bucket toward the appreciation we have for Norma and all that she has done for the children’s hospital.”

The Hoops Family Children’s Hospital has named the lobby after Norma. The designation symbolizes her commitment to the hospital.
