Bridge in Greenwich: Try your hand at the weekly quiz

December 21, 2018

Here’s a reminder to local bridge players: The YWCA weekly duplicate will not be held the next two Mondays, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. The next duplicate game at the YW will be on Jan. 7, at the usual starting time of 12:15 p.m. In addition, the YW’s Friday morning supervised bridge class will not be held on Dec. 28.

Duplicate players are also reminded of the upcoming five-day regional tournament that will be held at the Midtown Hilton in New York City from Dec. 26 to Dec. 30. Further information regarding events and start times is available at www.gnyba.org.

Today’s quiz: Here is another in the current series of quizzes on interpreting your partner’s bids. In the following problem, you are given an auction accompanied by three hands your partner might hold, but only one of which actually fits the bidding shown (you are not given your own hand). Applying the principles of standard bidding, which of the three hands do you think partner holds?

The bidding: Opponent-1S; Partner-1NT. Partner could hold:

a) S AJ3 H KJ5 D Q1073 C K84

b) S 974 H AQ6 D KQ5 C AK65

c) S KQ4 H 95 D KQ83 C AQJ2

Answer: A one notrump overcall of an opponent’s opening bid shows a hand equivalent to an opening one notrump bid, i.e., 15-17 high-card points, balanced distribution, and stoppers in at least three suits. As an overcall, however, it makes one further guarantee - that at least one sure stopper is held in the opener’s suit.

Of the three hands given, only c) meets these requirements. Hand a) lacks sufficient point count, while hand b) does not contain a spade stopper. The only viable alternative with both hands would be a takeout double, since each has three-card or better support for all the unbid suits.
