Wife of Imprisoned Ex-Police Chief Dead
DETROIT (AP) _ The wife of former police Chief William Hart, who is serving a 10-year sentence for embezzling $2.3 million in police funds, has died. She was 62.
Laura Hart was taken to Harper Hospital late Monday after she had trouble breathing and died shortly afterward, a hospital spokeswoman said today.
The cause of death was unknown and an autopsy was planned, said spokeswoman Leigh Sullivan.
″She was brought in last night by a neighbor,″ Sullivan said. ″She had called them up to say she was having trouble breathing. Unfortunately, about 10 minutes from the hospital, she stopped breathing.″
Mrs. Hart attended last year’s trial in U.S. District Court, during which witnesses testified that the chief used some of the stolen money to support girlfriends.
