High School Roundup GHS rugby wins at nationals

The Greenwich High School boys rugby team remained in action at the National High School Rugby Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday and capped pool play with a 41-10 victory against Kahuku (Hawaii) Rugby.

The Cardinals took a 7-0 edge on a try and conversion kick from Francisco Liguori. Sliding into the try zone on the wet pitch, Liguori scored again, putting the Cardinals ahead, 12-0. A try from Santi Thompson made it 17-0, then Andrew Nanai reached the try zone, giving Greenwich a commanding 22-0 advantage.

Nanai sprinted to try zone again and Liguori was true on the conversion kick, making it 29-0. Liguori added another try and a kick and Nanai scored again with the assistance of Joe Fernandez, sealing the Cardinals’ big victory.

On Friday, Greenwich was edged by Penn Rugby at nationals, 25-22. Penn got the win behind a late try. Nanai, Johnny Alexandre, Liguori, Larry Deluca each had tries for the Cardinal against Penn Rugby.
