Residents Evacuated but No Injuries in Late-night Lowell Fire
LOWELL -- Firefighters subdued a blaze that broke out in the second story of a multifamily home at 10 Meadowcroft St., late Wednesday night.
The cause of the blaze, reported about 11 p.m., remains under investigation, Lowell Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Gilligan said before midnight, shortly after the blaze was knocked down.
He added that the six to eight people who were inside the three-family structure in South Lowell evacuated the building without injury. Two of those women stood outside the home in their nightgowns as firefighters fought the blaze.
“Nobody was injured,” said Carmen Montanez, while standing next to her sister, Mercedes Montanez. “Thank the Lord.”
They said they were inside Mercedes’ second-story apartment at the front of the house when it began to fill with smoke.
According to Gilligan, the fire started in a second-story apartment at the back of the house.
All three families living in the structure will be staying with family for the night, he said.
