Route 7 to be closed in New Milford next Thursday

December 20, 2018

A portion of Route 7 will be closed next Thursday as a large transformer is brought through town.

The road is expected to be closed between Pickett District Road and Route 55 from 8:30 p.m. on Thursday to 5 a.m. on Friday. Motorists should seek alternate routes.

Route 55 in New Milford and Sherman might also be closed in New Milford and Sherman as part of the move on Friday.

Jumper bridges are needed at several smaller stream crossings, which is why the road needs to be closed. The closure will be in effect until the transformer is through that area and the jumpers are removed, according to a state Department of Transportation press release.

The transformer weighs 476,700 pounds and will be carried on a specialized 12-axle trailer. The oversize/overweight vehicle is permitted, according to DOT.

State Police is escorting and coordinating the move.

“Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions,” the release states.
