Panthers to keep Ismail, Smith

February 26, 1997

CHARLOTTE (AP) _ The Carolina Panthers have agreed to terms with wide receiver Raghib Ismail and re-signed cornerback Rod Smith.

Ismail gained 394 yards on 12 catches, eight rushes and five kickoff returns last year. He played in 12 games, starting twice, in his first season with the Panthers.

Ismail, who spent four season with Oakland after his collegiate career at Notre Dame, was acquired by the Panthers in a trade with the Raiders for a 1997 fifth-round draft choice.

Smith was the Panthers’ first selection in the 1995 expansion draft and played in all 16 games in the team’s inaugural season. He joined Minnesota last year as an unrestricted free agent, but was released in October and rejoined the Panthers.

Smith had 11 tackles and one sack in the 1996 regular season.
