ST. ANTHONY — Police Chief Allen Neff has released the name of Friday’s drowning victim.
“Reporting parties indicated the the swimmer, Jaunito D. Augustin, a 22-year- old Brigham Young University-Idaho student from New York City, had dove into the river off of the diving board at the Sandbar, then failed to resurface,” Neff said.
Augustin was reported missing around 9:05 p.m., he said.
“(Augustin) had dove into the river off of the diving board at the Sandbar, then failed to resurface,” Neff said.
About two hours later, searches found his body.
“At approximately 11:09 PM Mountain Standard Time, Fremont County Search and Rescue divers located Augustin in approximately 30 feet of water, 50 yards down river from the diving board where Augustine was last seen,” he said.
Attempts to resuscitate Augustin failed. His body was taken to Flamm funeral home. Officials deemed the cause of his death to be from drowning. There was no indication of any head injuries, Neff said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Jaunito Augustin during this difficult time. St. Anthony Police Department would also like to thank the citizens of St. Anthony, all agencies and individuals involved for their quick response and professionalism,” he said.
Neff reported that emergency responders as well as citizens joined forces in finding Augustin. Fremont County Emergency Services, Fremont County Search & Rescue units, East Idaho Life Flight, Fremont County EMS, South Fremont Fire, Saint Anthony Police Department, Fremont County Sheriff’s Deputies as well as Idaho State Police all helped with the search, he said.
This is the second drowning in Fremont County in as many weeks. Earlier this month, Justin Grass, 14, of Sandy, Utah, died after he went swimming with a friend and cousin in the Teton River near the Teton Dam. His body was found on the 4th of July.
