Clerk Strike Closes Belgian Banks

September 24, 1999

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) _ A nationwide strike by clerks demanding better working conditions closed many banks Friday in Belgium.

Unions said they are worried that Saturday shifts will become more widespread and that consolidation in the sector will lead to dismissals and less-flexible working conditions.

The Belgian Bankers’ Association has been meeting with the Christian Democrat and Socialist unions throughout the summer but have failed to come to an agreement.
