DeKalb County building commission: Jail hot water, softener issues resolved

December 5, 2018

SYCAMORE – The resolution of hot water and water softener issues at the DeKalb County Jail was one topic of conversation during the county’s most recent Public Building Commission meeting earlier this week.

The update comes after the county Public Building Commission met Tuesday morning at the DeKalb County Administration Building’s Conference Room East, 110 E. Sycamore St.

Joyce Klein, chief of corrections for the DeKalb County jail, said the hot water and water softener issues started in September and are now resolved. She said the whole jail was affected by the water softener because of the new system using too much salt, which was because it was filled up all the way when it should only be filled up halfway. She said two or three cell blocks were without hot water right off the bat.

Since everything in the jail expansion was under warranty for a year, it didn’t cost the county anything, Klein said.

“For as many square feet that we have, we haven’t had that many problems,” Klein said.

DeKalb County Administrator Gary Hanson also said the rezoning process for the county nursing home expansion project has been scheduled with the City of DeKalb, which will result in a construction delay.

“It looks like if everything stays on track, we hope that zoning will be approved in mid-January,” Hanson said.

Hanson said interior construction will begin as soon as those plans are approved by the city.

Another matter covered in the meeting included a contractor asking for more money for exceeding the amount of hours worked for the DeKalb County jail expansion, which the commission denied due to a lack of prior authorization on the contractor’s part, Hanson said.

The commission also discussed the update on an HVAC unit for the public safety building after approving a $118,840 bid from One Source about two months ago. Hanson said the county is working to remove parts of the old system currently but the installation of the new system will happen this coming spring.
