BUFFALO, N.D. (AP) _ An explosion and fire on Tuesday rocked a building used to make decorative smoke products, killing a man working inside and severely burning another who tried to rescue him, authorities said.

The explosion at the Lightning Pyrotechnics building was reported about 12:30 p.m. The body of the 43-year-old victim was not recovered for nearly four hours because of the flames and fumes.

``From what I can understand, they produce smoke products here, like for air shows,'' Cass County Sheriff's Lt. Rick Majerus said.

A man, woman and 10-year-old girl live on the property, Majerus said. ``The 38-year-old man that actually lives on the property was in the home, heard the explosion and tried to rescue the deceased,'' Majerus said. ``He was burned pretty badly.''

That man was taken to a Minnesota burn hospital, where he was in critical condition Tuesday night. The 10-year-old girl was treated for smoke inhalation and released, and the woman escaped injury, he said.

Two firefighters suffered from chemical burns and were treated by medical personnel at the scene.
